Simon Briercliffe in Conversation with Professor Keith Gildart

The BCSC has joined forces with ArtsFest Online for this special ‘in conversation’ event. Join Historian and BCLM Researcher Simon Briercliffe and University of Wolverhampton Professor of Labour and Social History Keith Gildart, as they discuss the working class history of the Black Country. The discussion will focus on Simon’s new book, Forging Ahead: Austerity to Prosperity in the Black Country, 1945 – 1968.

Simon Briercliffe is a historian of the Black Country, based at Black Country Living Museum. He is currently completing doctoral research on housing, poverty and immigration in Wolverhampton at the University of Birmingham. Simon has also been researcher for BCLM’s Forging Ahead project, bringing the post-World War Two Black Country to life.
Keith Gildart is a Professor of Labour and Social History. After working as an underground coal miner for seven years he studied at the universities of Manchester and York. His research interests are focused on 19th/20th Century British history, labour movements, working class politics , youth culture and popular music. Keith has published widely on British labour history, most notably a monograph on the North Wales miners and numerous articles and edited collections on coal mining history.
